For those looking for an account of the famous 18th century English highwayman Dick Turpin, this is not the place. Apple TV+'s outrageous comedy series, “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin,” is exactly as advertised: a whimsical invention. Comedian Noel Fielding adopts Turpin's flamboyant persona, albeit with trappings like the iconic purple shoes, a historical inaccuracy to be sure, but who's counting?
In a gleefully revisionist take, the show combines the irreverence of Monty Python with the swashbuckling style of “Our Flag Means Death,” infused with the surreal energy reminiscent of “The Mighty Boosh.” Set in 1735 England, each of the six episodes weaves a story similar to tales shared over pints in a dimly lit tavern. Chronicling Turpin's escapades is Eliza Bean (played by Dolly Wells), a true crime writer seeking to embellish the legend and capitalize on the gang's notoriety.

While Turpin met his end by hanging in 1739 for horse theft, the show focuses on the final years of his life, weaving together his contemporary celebrity and his romantic legacy. With Turpin leading the ragtag Essex gang, which includes the likes of sniper Nell Brazier (Ellie White) and empathetic tracker Honesty Courage (Duayne Boachie), the series is set in the woods of Essex, where they attempt to establish their criminal enterprise with a comic ineptitude.
Like “Our Flag Means Death,” the show subverts traditional tropes of masculinity, infusing modern language and emphasizing camaraderie over aggression. Despite some dated jokes, the script generates genuine laughs, with Fielding's Turpin portrayed more as a jolly bard than a ruthless outlaw, who prefers charm to violence and often ruins his criminal endeavors.
Fielding's performance channels his signature whimsy, blending seamlessly with the cast, which includes familiar faces from his past collaborations such as Rich Fulcher and Simon Farnaby. Guest appearances from Joe Wilkinson, Asim Chaudhry and Tamsin Greig add further depth to the comedy ensemble, with standout performances from Hugh Bonneville and Connor Swindells.
With its packed cast of British comedians and a surreal story-adjacent premise, “The Completely Invented Adventures of Dick Turpin” offers a rewarding adventure for those looking for an offbeat adventure comedy, albeit with a generous dose of artistic license.
