The Gentlemen 2024 Tv Series Review Trailer

A new Guy Ritchie project has become something of an annual tradition, at least since 2019, as the British filmmaker has released a new film almost every year since. He is best known for his fast-paced style, quick cuts, and specific sense of humor, and often brings his distinctive brand of storytelling to notable films such as Sherlock Holmes, Aladdin, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, for an infinite number of results.

The Gentlemen film features an all-star cast including Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Michelle Dockery and Henry Golding, each of whom play vibrant and memorable characters. While one would think that a series with a Netflix budget would allow these characters to return as guests, that is not the case.

Star: Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings

Rather than being a direct sequel or retelling of the feature film, Ritchie uses the show to tell a new story that shares a similar setting and themes as the original film, but also follows an entirely new set of characters. While this may initially seem disappointing to fans of the film, they will be pleased to know that this new series is even better than the original.

The Gentlemen begins when Eddie Horniman (Theo James) is discharged from military service when he is told that his wealthy father is on his deathbed. Following the patriarch's death, Eddie's bumbling older brother Freddie (Daniel Ings) is largely expected to inherit the family's extensive estate, but that's not exactly what happens. Instead, it is announced that Eddie is his father's true heir, and with that, he has to deal with the sketchy finances his father left behind.

The two brothers soon learn that his father earned a large portion of the family fortune through a marijuana empire that operated under the luxurious estate. The business is overseen by the shrewd and mysterious Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) while her father, Bobbie (Ray Winstone), serves time in a nearby prison. Against the best interests of the rest of his family, Eddie forms an uneasy partnership with Susie, as she slowly becomes increasingly corrupted by the British criminal world.

While each of The Gentlemen's eight episodes lasts between 42 minutes and just over an hour, you never feel the length, and that's mainly because Ritchie's rapid-fire way of telling a story is in full effect. It's also part of the reason why the show is even more successful than the movie.

The 2020 film features a broad set of characters with multiple stories that play out together and often overlap with each other, and as entertaining as it is, it's a bit complicated at times. That's not the case with The Gentlemen, which manages to play like the best kinds of British crime series packaged in Ritchie's particular brand of filmmaking.

While the show is not without an overarching arc, there is also a serialized nature to the storytelling that works to its advantage. While the first two episodes, directed by Ritchie, serve as the basic setup, subsequent installments have Eddie and Susie crossing paths with various characters, be they criminals, nomads, or fight promoters. At the same time, while The Gentlemen has its fair share of petty violence, it also allows us to become attached to the characters, even if many of them are morally corrupt.
