Girls State 2024 Movie Review Trailer

Filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine embark on their second venture documenting teenagers participating in mock democratic setups with the release of Girls State, a companion to their acclaimed 2020 documentary Boys State. This unique leadership program challenges teens to establish their own state, complete with a governor, city council, and even a mock supreme court.

Describing this exercise as democracy in its purest form, Jesse refers to it as the “worst form of democracy training except for all the others there are.” According to him, Girls State provides a rare space for people of diverse political beliefs to engage in meaningful dialogue and gain first-hand experience of democratic mechanisms. Amanda emphasizes the effectiveness of the program's “learning by doing” approach, in which participants address real problems within a simulated environment.

Directors: Amanda McBaine, Jesse Moss
Stars: Faith Glasgow, Cecilia Bartin, Nisha Murali

Filmed against the backdrop of America grappling with the looming possibility of Roe v. Wade is overturned, Girls State delves into young women's deliberations on abortion-related cases. Beyond mere moral debates, the film explores the complexities of legal battles like the Dobbs case.

For Nisha Murali, one of the teenagers featured in the documentary, Girls State offers an opportunity to establish common ground among participants before delving into political divisions. However, Jesse sees flaws in the program, noting that girls are initially cautious and lack the same freedom as boys to immerse themselves in politics.

Gender segregation emerges as a pertinent theme in the film, raising questions about integration. While she recognizes the benefits of women-only spaces, Nisha advocates for continued integration efforts. However, she recognizes the initial value of women coming together to overcome shared barriers to political representation.

The documentary captures the camaraderie and political aspirations of the teenagers, a feat made possible thanks to months of casting and close collaboration with the participants. Each cast member was paired with a dedicated videographer, fostering a sense of comfort and confidence in front of the lens.

Amanda reflects on the unexpected support and encouragement that emerged among the ambitious participants, challenging stereotypes of teenage behavior. For Nisha, Girls State served as a lesson in resilience and adaptation, shaping her perspective beyond political ambitions.

In documenting this transformative experience, Jesse sees parallels to the unpredictable nature of documentary filmmaking, highlighting the potential for personal growth and revelation. Ultimately, Girls State offers a moving exploration of youth, ambition, and the transformative power of shared experiences.
