Dolly 2025 Movie Review Trailer

Imagine contemplating the beauty of nature during a short walk through the woods and stumbling upon a tall, stout doll dressed in red with a porcelain face. Terrifying, right? Since the film is called Dolly, the poster features the porcelain-faced human in question, and most viewers have likely seen the trailer, so what I've described isn't really surprising. But the real question is: how dangerous is this gigantic doll? What does she really want? And, most importantly, will there be any survivors? Dolly addresses all of these, but if you're interested in discovering what the person behind the porcelain mask is like, you'll be disappointed.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspires most mask-based horror films, and for director Rod Blackhurst, it's no different, and it shows in his work. Although the genre no longer dominates the horror scene, it remains fundamental. There's something about not really knowing who the killer is: the lack of human contact makes death inevitable. Curiosity, as well as the constant looming threat, is why masked killers remain audience favorites.

Director: Rod Blackhurst
Writers: Rod Blackhurst, Brandon Weavil
Stars: Fabianne Therese, Russ Tiller, Michalina Scorzelli

Using a doll's face as a mask is brilliant. Dolls are often associated with innocence, childhood, and nostalgia, so portraying them in a terrifying light results in a truly unsettling feeling. We've seen possessed dolls, but a human with a porcelain doll's face... this is a first! It immediately generates intrigue and interest.

Chase was in love with Macy and had decided to propose. Macy got along well with her daughter and thought starting a family with her would be the right decision. Macy sensed a marriage proposal was coming, but she wasn't quite sure how to feel about it. She loved Chase, but the idea of being a mother made her uneasy. She had never wanted to be a mother, and although she loved her daughter, she wasn't sure she was ready for all the responsibilities that come with motherhood. Chase already had a ring in his backpack and planned to propose to Macy in a picturesque location. To get there, they had to walk through the woods.

Along the way, they saw dolls scattered everywhere. They wondered if it was an art project; maybe someone was trying to provoke a reaction from visitors? Chase thought it was too creepy, but Macy wanted to take a doll home. In a horror movie, if someone says they want to take a doll home, you know it's a terrible idea. After crossing the doll area, they finally arrived at the spot where Chase had planned to propose to Macy.

Just as he was about to pull the ring out of his backpack, they heard creepy music. Macy wondered what it was, and Chase couldn't imagine proposing to the love of his life with creepy music playing in the background. So he decided to follow the sound to find out what was going on (bad move!). Now the movie is called Dolly, there are dolls in the woods, and the eerie music seemed to be coming from a toy box. Who did you expect Chase to run into after following the music? No need to guess—it was Dolly. Chase was obviously terrified when he saw the giant, silent doll holding a shovel. Before he could even try to escape, Dolly attacked him, and to find out what happened next, you have to see the movie!

Dolly is shot on Super 16mm, with a visual style reminiscent of found footage. The grainy images immediately evoke a sense of nostalgia and deep intimacy. It feels as though the story isn't set in the present day, and the handheld camera aesthetic adds a sense of urgency and randomness. The visual style underscores the idea that this wasn't supposed to happen, or that it was something the protagonists didn't expect. It also feels like a 1970s videotape stored in a basement closet that you suddenly stumble across and decide to watch. Terrifying, yes, but ultimately effective!

Dolly Dolly is gory, so if you're repulsed by blood gushing everywhere and feeling gasped (literally), you'd better steer clear. But if you're into gore, you'll love Dolly. From disemboweling someone with your bare hands to using a shovel in innovative ways, the film is a bloody, gory experience. It's uncomfortable, shocking, and disgusting—basically everything a good gore film should make you feel. The moment you think this was perhaps the most horrific thing that could possibly happen, you're wrong. The film has a very over-the-top appeal, and the gore scenes are executed flawlessly.

As a horror film, it's somewhat predictable. Given the premise, it's obvious that two innocent people will stumble upon this "monstrous" entity, and their lives will be turned upside down. The trailer also suggests that the killer isn't acting randomly; there's a pattern and intent. Therefore, it's predictable that the film will delve into the killer's psyche. The fact that the film is so obvious was rather disappointing. While the impact is conveyed through gory scenes, the narrative doesn't have much to offer. It's a simple story, really, so if someone isn't into the bloody world of masked killers, they'll probably be disappointed.

Perhaps if the narrative had been more complex and nuanced, instead of being so obvious and straightforward, the film could have been more intriguing. There's a sense of unease in realizing that the killer suffers from a serious mental disorder, especially since he's presented as a terrifying figure, and I think the film could have handled this with a bit more sensitivity. The performances are convincing; you wouldn't expect to see Seann William Scott in a horror film, and his acting will leave you speechless. Fabianne Therese as Macy will have you rooting for her. In short, Dolly is a slightly over-the-top slasher horror film that's definitely worth watching if you enjoy gore. It's terrifying, suffocating, and shocking, so be prepared to hold your breath in a scene or two.
