Saipan 2026 Movie Review Trailer

Saipan 2026. A film loosely based on the conflict between the Republic of Ireland coach, Mike McCarthy (Steve Coogan), and his star player, Roy Keane (Eanna Hardwicke), and Keane's subsequent departure from the Irish squad for the World Cup.

To begin with, Hardwicke doesn't resemble Keane at all—she's much taller—but she does capture his arrogance. Coogan isn't an exact copy either, but she does capture his seemingly chaotic approach to player management.

Directors: Lisa Barros D'Sa, Glenn Leyburn
Writer:: Paul Fraser
Stars: Éanna Hardwicke, Steve Coogan, Peter McDonald

What I felt while watching the film was the disastrous state of Irish planning. That was the problem: Keane, of Manchester United fame, expected more.

I watched The Damned United last week, which deals with the rivalry between Brian Clough and Don Revie. It's tense, funny, and genuinely interesting, but this isn't.

It's okay, and it plays on Irish stereotypes.

The best part for me was hearing the Walker Brothers' sublime version of Tom Rush's "Sin Regrets" during the end credits.

A footnote about the film: in 2002, while watching the Ireland vs. Spain penalty shootout in the pub, my friend, who I was with, spent the entire match staring at the backside of a Spanish student; it was quite a sight, to be fair. After leaving the pub, he went to a brothel to console himself after Ireland's defeat. Funny what you remember.
