Everest: The Other Side 2026 Movie Review Trailer

"Because it’s there"—this is the famous, possibly apocryphal, response attributed to British mountaineer George Mallory when asked why he wanted to climb Everest. Unlike contemporary mountaineer Jim Morrison, Mallory had no intention of skiing down it. But isn’t that same evasive answer still valid? What drives certain people to undertake such reckless, dangerous, and near-impossible feats? If they simply *can* do it, *should* they? These are the questions that will likely occupy the minds of many viewers as they watch *Everest: The Other Side*—a visually stunning, and ostensibly poignant, documentary about Morrison, his late partner Hilaree Nelson, and their shared dream of ski-mountaineering on Everest—an adventure that ultimately cost Nelson her life. However, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin—the (formerly married) duo who won an Oscar for the dizzying spectacle of *Free Solo*, their 2018 film about the equally ambitious and daring climber Alex Honnold—address the...

The Trial of Alec Baldwin 2026 Movie Review Trailer

*The Trial of Alec Baldwin* (2026) is a fascinating and emotionally complex documentary that examines one of Hollywood’s most controversial real-life tragedies and the ensuing legal battle. Directed by Rory Kennedy, the film revisits the fatal shooting that claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of the Western *Rust* in October 2021, and explores how a devastating on-set accident turned into a national debate regarding accountability, fame, media influence, and the American justice system.

Rather than functioning as a conventional true-crime documentary, the film focuses largely on Alec Baldwin himself, following his personal struggles, the pressure of public judgment, and the uncertainty surrounding his legal future. With a runtime of approximately 111 minutes, the documentary offers an intimate look at a famous actor facing a crisis that threatens both his career and his public image.

Director: Rory Kennedy
Writers: Mark Bailey, Julia Marchesi
Stars: Alec Baldwin

Its greatest strength lies in its ability to prompt viewers to reflect on how quickly judgments are passed when a tragic event involves a well-known celebrity. At the same time, the heavy focus on Baldwin raises uncomfortable questions about whether the documentary pays sufficient attention to the victim and the broader circumstances of the tragedy.

The story begins with the events that transformed the lives of everyone involved in *Rust*. On October 21, 2021, a firearm held by Baldwin discharged a live round, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. What was meant to be a routine day on a film set turned into an unimaginable catastrophe, sparking investigations, intense media coverage, and questions about how such a failure could occur on a professional set. The documentary uses this tragedy as a starting point for a broader analysis of the individuals and institutions involved. Explore how the initial shock and grief gradually became entangled with accusations, conflicting accounts, and public demands for accountability. The subject matter is inherently unsettling, as it deals with a real death rather than a fictional mystery designed for entertainment.

This reality lends the film an emotional gravity that many mainstream true-crime productions struggle to achieve. However, it also places a significant responsibility on the filmmakers: to maintain perspective, acknowledge uncertainty, and remember that the central event was, first and foremost, a human tragedy long before it became a news headline. One of the documentary’s most distinctive features is the access it provides to Baldwin following the shooting and during the subsequent legal proceedings. Rather than presenting him solely through television interviews, press articles, and courtroom footage, the film attempts to reveal the person behind his well-known public persona.

Baldwin appears as a man grappling with fear, frustration, emotional exhaustion, and the consequences of finding himself at the center of an international controversy. This access to his personal side yields some of the documentary’s most revealing moments. Audiences who may know Baldwin primarily for his acting, political commentary, or clashes with the press might come to better understand his vulnerability. Yet, gaining insight into his emotional state does not equate to a complete understanding. Witnessing a person’s suffering does not automatically determine the extent of their culpability, nor does personal anguish resolve questions regarding their professional conduct. The film is most effective when it allows viewers to observe Baldwin’s predicament without treating his emotions as a substitute for evidence.

Rory Kennedy’s direction lends the documentary a serious, investigative tone, although the approach is not always as balanced as the subject matter demands. The filmmaker is interested in the relationship between individual identity and institutional power—specifically, how a public figure’s reputation can shape the interpretation of events. Baldwin’s established fame, his outspoken personality, and his history of public controversies make him a particularly compelling subject for study. The documentary suggests that the public reaction was not driven solely by the circumstances of the shooting, but also by pre-existing opinions about Baldwin. Those who already held a negative view of him could easily interpret the tragedy as confirmation of their impressions, while his supporters might perceive the criticism directed at him as evidence of unfair persecution.

The film’s treatment of the legal proceedings is another point of great interest. Baldwin faced a charge of involuntary manslaughter following the shooting, and his case became a closely watched legal drama. The prosecution and the defense presented conflicting interpretations of liability, while the public followed events through a constant stream of headlines and commentary. Ultimately, the criminal case against Baldwin was dismissed with prejudice in July 2024, after the court determined that evidence had been improperly withheld from the defense.

This dismissal is a crucial part of the documentary’s narrative, as it illustrates how the conduct of investigators and prosecutors can play a central role in the pursuit of justice. The legal outcome also demonstrates why criminal proceedings should not be reduced to a simplistic confrontation between a seemingly guilty celebrity and an outraged public. However, the dismissal should not be interpreted as an exhaustive explanation of all the safety failures surrounding the shooting. A court’s decision regarding the viability of a criminal case differs from a comprehensive assessment of workplace liability, and the documentary would be stronger if it consistently maintained that distinction.

Another important aspect of the film is its analysis of media culture. From the moment the shooting became public, Baldwin was surrounded by cameras, headlines, speculation, and intense online debate. The documentary illustrates how news coverage can transform a complex legal matter into a personality-driven spectacle. Instead of closely examining the technical and procedural issues regarding firearm safety on a film set, much of the public debate centered on whether Baldwin came across as likable, arrogant, negligent, a victim, or someone deserving of punishment.

This shift in focus—from evidence to personality—is one of the film’s most significant observations. Fame leads the public to feel they know a person, even when their perception is based solely on selected performances and brief public appearances. Consequently, people may mistake familiarity for genuine knowledge, and emotional reactions for informed judgment. The documentary effectively demonstrates how reputation can shape public opinion long before all the facts have been clarified. However, the film’s own emphasis on Baldwin also illustrates the very media dynamic it critiques: the famous actor remains the central figure, while the broader circumstances of the tragedy risk being relegated to the background.
