The Eyes of Ghana 2026 Movie Review Trailer

Image
Two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot turns his lens toward Chris Hesse, a 90-year-old man brimming with energy who filmed the most significant historical events in Ghana. Depending on whom you ask, Kwame Nkrumah is either a hero—tragically denied the chance to see his vision realized—or a narcissistic, would-be dictator. Director: Ben Proudfoot Stars: Edmund Addo, Anita Afonu, Chris Hesse As prime minister and, later, president of Ghana, Nkrumah oversaw the African nation’s peaceful separation from Great Britain and became a fervent advocate for Pan-Africanism. He championed the union of African nations into an entity he dreamed of calling the "United States of Africa," convinced that by uniting to control the continent’s natural resources, Africa could break free from colonial influence and emerge as a key player on the global stage. Yet, he also resorted to authoritarian tactics—such as declaring Ghana a one-party state with himself as president for life—which ultimately tr...

History of Evil 2024 Movie Review Trailer

Image
Bo Mirhosseni's dystopian horror drama begins with an on-screen text exposition, describing the transformation of the United States into the North American Federation in 2045, a fascist regime imposed by roving militias who invoke the name of God and country. The decision about the distant future probably sparked debates among the filmmakers, but the disturbing portrait of America depicted in “History of Evil” doesn't seem far from reality.  In the film's opening sequence, a girl is transported through a checkpoint in a van, sporting a tracking device on her ankle, scrutinized by armed guards. While undeniably chilling, the standards of dystopian fiction in 2024 have changed; After all, just five years earlier, the United States confined migrant children in freezing, overcrowded cages, sleeping on cement floors. Director: Bo Mirhosseni Writer: Bo Mirhosseni Stars: Paul Wesley, Jackie Cruz, Zachary Branch The focal point is Daria (Murphee Bloom), daughter of Alegre (Jackie ...

Red Right Hand 2024 Movie Review Trailer

Image
The latest crime thriller from filmmaker brothers Eshom and Ian Helms (known for “Small Town Crime” and “Fatman”) is a nostalgic nod to '70s exploitation films, so much so that it could easily include American International Pictures at the top of their credits. . Starring Orlando Bloom, who adopts a tough Southern accent, “Red Right Hand” breaks no new ground in the well-worn genre. However, it offers plenty of bloody action and shootouts to satisfy fans, who are more likely to see it on VOD than at drive-ins. Bloom plays Cash, the main character whose rugged masculinity is established early on with shirtless push-ups and pull-ups. Despite his tough exterior, Cash is portrayed as a decent man, still grieving the loss of his sister and caring for his troubled brother-in-law Finney (played with surprising depth by Scott Haze) and his resilient niece Savannah (played by Chapel Oaks). and Will Trent). Cash's compassionate nature is evident when he helps a struggling foal during bi...

Ordinary Angels 2024 Movie Review Trailer

Image
With a true story centered on ordinary people achieving extraordinary feats, “Ordinary Angels” can't help but embrace sentimentality at its core. It's built into their DNA and it's the reason this compelling and moving drama came to the big screen 30 years after it was made, at a time when we too are searching for light in a dark world. What elevates the film beyond your average inspirational nonsense, however, is the way director Jon Gunn and company control the slow release of its sweetness so as not to overwhelm. This technique, while forgivably manipulative, works to great effect and in the end even the cynics will be won over by the human kindness on display. Director: Jon Gunn Writers: Kelly Fremon Craig, Meg Tilly Stars: Alan Ritchson, Hilary Swank, Amy Acker Sharon (Hilary Swank) is a disaster. She lives alone in a dreary apartment and there's barely anything in her refrigerator but stale leftovers and freezer-burned dreams of a better life. She also leaves slop...

Drive-Away Dolls 2024 Movie Review Trailer

The Coen brothers split four years ago and it has taken them a while to release solo albums that define their identities. (The Beatles broke up in 1970, and Paul, John and George had completed their solo recording mission by the end of that year.) In 2021, Joel Coen directed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was a dazzling film noir. black-and-white pastiche of a Shakespearean drama (a little Bergman, a little Val Lewton, a little “Ivan the Terrible” and “Ordet” and “The Trial”).  It was well made, but it felt like a one-off, a decision by Coen to serve the material (and perhaps to serve his wife, Frances McDormand, who gave a spectacular performance as Lady Macbeth). A year later, Ethan Coen presented “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a small-scale rock and roll documentary he made during the pandemic; It was a YouTube clip work, and expertly crafted in those terms, but even after Jerry Lee's death (five months after the film premiered in Cannes), it was never released. Dire...
