Assassin's Creed Mirage 2023 Video Game Review Trailer Cast Crew

Assassin's Creed Mirage, the next entry in Ubisoft's long-running action-adventure series, is coming in 2023. The publisher announced the release date today during its Ubisoft Forward event. Set two decades before the events of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the game will reunite fans with a Basim Ibn Ishaq and return the series to its stealth roots.

In a briefing held ahead of today's presentation, Ubisoft Bordeaux, the project's lead development studio, described Basim as the most agile assassin in franchise history. He will have new abilities to help him avoid detection, some of which can be seen on display in the cinematic trailer that Ubisoft shared today. An integral part of Basim's team is Enkidu, his pet eagle. Like Senu in Origins, Enkidu can scout for you to spot potential threats, but new to Mirage is that there will be archers who can spot and take out your feathered friend. In addition to new gadgets, including smoke bombs and poison mines, Basim will also have the ability to briefly slow time and plan multiple kills.

Director: Stephane Boudon
Writer: Sarah Beaulieu
Stars: Lee Majdoub, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Sophia Eleni

With the action mainly returning to a single city, Baghdad around 861 CE, parkour will play a much larger role than in more recent games. Ubisoft Bordeaux said that Basim would be one of the fastest free runners in franchise history, with a moveset that includes returning and new tricks. Meanwhile, the story will focus on The Hidden Ones, the organization that predates the Assassin Brotherhood and will see Shohreh Aghdashloo play Basim's mentor, Roshan.

"[Mirage] is going to be a condensed experience," Assassin's Creed Mirage art director Jean-Luc Sala told me. "It's a more focused game. Its size is something like Rogue or Revelations, just to give you an idea of the scope."

Therefore, players can expect Mirage to probably be a bit bigger than early Assassin's Creed games, like the original or Brotherhood. However, it looks like it's not Black Flag or Odyssey. "From the size of the city or the map, you can expect something as dense as Paris in Unity," Sala said. "We have some wild nature, which was not the case in Paris. Paris was just Paris, and there were very little things from Versailles just for the taste. But we have more than Baghdad [in Mirage]. We can get outside the walls and see some nice places."

In addition to being a more condensed experience compared to Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, Mirage will also place a greater emphasis on parkour and social stealth skills. Unlike Bayek, Kassandra, and Eivor, Basim is not a warrior who can safely rack up hits and openly take on multiple foes. If you're trying to assassinate a target, you'll need to be strategic in your approach, stealthily placing traps and being a hidden sword in the crowd. And if you're detected, you might be better off running away and trying again later; fighting off your pursuers can land you in an early grave.

"Basim is definitely not Eivor," Sala said. "You have to pay attention to that, what you do, how you play. If you get hit, you get hit. You'll regret it very, very soon. If you start fighting big, beefy enemies, thinking this is like Valhalla, you're going to die. very fast. You just have to take your time, look around... It's more like a bird of prey playing with its prey. Take your time, look around, be smart, move fast. , kill, disappear, think again, look around. So it's really just that: you kill and disappear, then come back again. If you're static, it's not good."

Sala describes Basim as one of the fastest protagonists in the Assassin's Creed series, possessing many gadgets and abilities that help him move quickly around Baghdad, such as the pole vault, which allows Basim to quickly cross gaps while he runs. "The pace of parkour is definitely faster than previous games, so you have some tools to help you go faster," Sala said. "So the parkour base has been improved, faster. You've got new vanishing tools that help a lot. Corner turning is back, so you can go really fast, turn around and go somewhere else. It's A mix of old and new. Mechanics, but nothing revolutionary."

Basim can even pull off a new multi-takedown that sounds a lot like a more murderous version of Batman: Arkham Knight's Fear Multi-Takedown, allowing him to effortlessly kill multiple targets at once in quick succession. "It's not something you can do all the time," Sala said. "You learn it and you improve it. Maybe, at first, you're not able to use that on more than two enemies, but maybe it can go further."
